RALEIGH, N.C. - Today is Women's Equality Day, and a new national survey ranks North Carolina near the top for one consideration that is important to women. The state is doing better than most when it comes to political empowerment, with more female elected lawmakers serving, compared with other states.

Overall, the state ranked 11th in the nation for women's equality, said Jill Gonzalez, spokeswoman for the survey group WalletHub.

"As far as North Carolina is concerned, it is doing quite well," she said. "It just missed the top 10, coming in at number 11, especially excelling in education ranks."

According to the Center for American Progress, women make up slightly less than 15 percent of executive officers and less than 5 percent of Fortune 500 chief executives.

The Tar Heel State is ranked 34th for workplace environments, a category that combines such topics as wages, the number of female executives and entrepreneurs. Gonzalez said the results leave room for improvement.

"North Carolina could have received a little bit better ranking when it came to the workplace environment, the number of executives," she said. "The gap here is about 65 percent, so in these executive positions, men hold them 65 percent more than women do. "

The WalletHub report combined findings of seven government agencies and organizations for its rankings. The World Economic Forum ranked the United States 20th worldwide for success in closing the gender gap. That puts the country behind developing nations such as Rwanda, and more established economies such as Iceland.

Women's Equality Day commemorates women gaining the right to vote in the United States with the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920.
