Report: Minority-Owned Businesses Bouncing Back from Recession

RALEIGH, N.C. - Minority-owned businesses are rebounding following the Great Recession, according to a new report by The Institute, an organization that aims to expand and diversify North Carolina's business base. Its analysis finds African American-owned firms expanded their employee numbers at a higher rate than white employers' businesses.

Andrea Harris, senior fellow at The Institute, says the economic downtown prompted people to explore all their options.

"As there were layoffs, people started to look at what they could do to naturally create income," says Harris. "Or, if they worked in jobs where their hours were cut back, then naturally, they looked at what they could do to supplement their income."

The Institute used U.S. Census Bureau data, which indicates that companies owned by African Americans added employees at a rate of nine-percent between 2007 and 2012. In the same time period, white-owned firms added to their workforce at a rate of slightly less than two percent.

Harris adds minority-owned businesses often have a direct impact on communities that might not otherwise be served by new business.

"People are regaining confidence in all of what's possible out here," says Harris. "We need as many minority-owned firms as we can, because so many of the minority-owned firms also have relationships in the under-served and undeveloped communities."

According to the Minority Business Development Agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce, minority-owned firms contribute $1 trillion in economic output and support 5.8 million jobs every year.
