Outdoor Recreation Advocates Call for Owyhee National Monument

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Outdoor recreation advocates are in Washington, D.C., this week to ask President Obama to create four new national monuments - including one that would protect more than 2 million acres in southeastern Oregon, near the Idaho border.

They're part of the Live Monumental campaign, sponsored by KEEN Footwear - the culmination of a two-month-long RV road trip across the United States, rallying support and gathering signatures for petitions to be delivered to the nation's capital.

Karl Findling, a third-generation local resident who owns a backpacking company, said the area needs to be protected from potential harm.

"The threats that we know out there that are coming - and that doesn't mean that they'll end there - are mining, oil and gas exploration and the ATV abuse," he said. "We see more and more ATVs that are cutting new roads."

The area is very remote - more than 100 miles from the nearest population center - so it has remarkably dark skies that make for spectacular stargazing and features 160 miles of wild and scenic rivers.

Keith Cozzens, spokesman for KEEN Footwear, said his company chose to feature Owyhees Canyonlands in this campaign because it is important habitat for the sage grouse and many other species in sagebrush country.

"It's home to elk, pronghorn, mule deer and some of the nation's largest herds of California bighorn sheep," he said. "It's also home to more than 85 plant species found nowhere else on the planet."

KEEN and local advocates are asking the president to use his powers under the Antiquities Act to declare Owyhees Canyonlands a national monument.

The petition is online at keenfootwear.com/livemonumental.
