RALEIGH, N.C. - The south Atlantic region that includes North Carolina could see an increase of more than a half million jobs by 2050 if additional clean-energy policies are put into place, according to a report released this week.

Nationwide, according to the study by NextGen Climate America, a nonpartisan organization aiming to advance low-carbon energy solutions. an economy built on clean energy would create more than 1 million jobs by 2030 and double that number by 2050. Daniel Lashof, chief operating officer at NextGen, said this region has some of the most to gain.

"In the south Atlantic region," he said, "investing in clean energy would be a big boost to employment of 300,000 to 400,000 jobs by 2030 and as much as 670,000 jobs in 2050 in the high-renewables case."

Analysts made the projections assuming there would be an 80 percent reduction of total carbon pollution, and more than 50 percent of energy generation would come from clean energy by 2030. The south Atlantic region shows the most potential in growth of gross domestic product, compared with the rest of the nation. Additionally, the region would see the most job growth, largely because of offshore wind construction.

The report said economic growth from clean energy would increase the average household's monthly disposable income by $570 over the next 35 years. While clean energy would require an initial investment, Lashof said, it has the potential to pay off in big dividends.

"To do that does involve investing a significant amount in building wind farms and solar plants and improving energy efficiency," he said, "but those investments actually have a big return."

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, North Carolina ranks 12th in the nation for electricity generation from renewable energy.

The report is online at nextgenamerica.org. Tennessee statistics are at apps1.eere.energy.gov.
