National Political Debate Brings Attention to Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa - Having a national event such as a presidential debate brings positive attention, both to Iowa's cities and rural areas, according to the head of the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"Well, it has huge impact," said Greg Edwards, president and chief executive of the bureau. "First of all, just the exposure that we've received over the last week, every news channel in the nation is broadcasting from Des Moines, from Iowa, and that kind of exposure you just can't pay for."

While Edwards said the bureau has not put a specific number on the economic impact of Saturday's debate, he estimated it at literally millions of dollars for the Des Moines and central Iowa economy.

Local residents can see the difference, he said.

"We know that many of the hotels are seeing an increase in occupancy this weekend and over the course of the last few days," he said. "We're seen more traffic around the city, and it certainly has huge impact."

He predicted an even greater impact early next year, with Iowa's first-in-the-nation presidential precinct caucuses on Feb. 1.

Edwards said he thinks having Des Moines in the spotlight now could lead to increased tourism later.

"Any time you can get exposure like we're getting to the national audience, it finally puts in people's minds, 'Hey, you know, Des Moines, Iowa, wow, why is all this great stuff going on there?' And perhaps it will lead to further tourism dollars and impact on us," he said. "We always say all news is good news when they're talking about Des Moines and Iowa."

The Republican candidates will debate in Iowa on Jan. 28, less than a week before the caucuses.
