LANSING, Mich. – Folks around Michigan are spending the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday by giving back to their communities.

Since 1994, MLK Day has been a national day of service to honor King's message of nonviolence and social justice.

Jason Alexander, a communications specialist with the Michigan Community Service Commission, says Michigan has always been a big player in service, and today schools, nonprofit groups and other organizations are volunteering their time.

"It's just great to see, you know, more and more people getting involved and going by Martin Luther King with his words, 'What are you doing for others?'” he states. “And there's people out there that have taken that to heart and are out there helping people and really making this a special day."

The Michigan Community Service Commission provided funding for 29 projects for this year's Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service, focusing on many issues, including hunger, education, public safety and environmental stewardship.

Beyond today's day of service, Alexander explains there are volunteer opportunities year-round.

He adds that whether it's helping an elderly neighbor or tutoring a child, carrying forth King's message of service can always be done on your own time.

"Even if it's small, any type of service you are contributing to helping your community and helping people so it doesn't have to be set out, organized event you can just do little things to help your community and participate in the day of service," he stresses.

Other MLK Day observances in Michigan include marches, peace walks, panel discussions, lectures and blood drives.
