La Universidad de California destinará $5 Millones a préstamos para estudiantes indocumentados

LOS ANGELES - La Universidad de California anunció esta semana que asignará cinco millones de dólares a préstamos escolares para ayudar a los alumnos indocumentados a pagar sus estudios.

El programa “Dream Loan” (Préstamo de Sueño) constituye un seguimiento a la ley “Dream Act 2011” de California, que permitió que algunos indocumentados solicitaran apoyo estatal y becas, y al “Assembly Bill 540”, que les otorgó la matrícula dentro del estado.

El Doctor Bob Samuels, un conferencista de UCLA, dice que la mayoría de estos estudiantes prácticamente han pasado toda su vida en los Estados Unidos y merecen una oportunidad de éxito.

“Les permite aspirar al sueño de una educación superior. ¿Cuál podría ser su motivación para esforzarse en ‘High School’, sabiendo que no tienen futuro?”

El costo anual por estudiar una carrera en la Universidad de California y vivir en el campus, es de unos 33 mil dólares.

Chris Carter, director de apoyo financiero estudiantil en la Dirección del sistema UCLA, comenta que los estudiantes indocumentados están limitados por el hecho de que se les impide el acceso al tan importante dinero federal.

“La abrumadora proporción de dólares en préstamo es de programas federales y estos estudiantes no son elegibles para recibir apoyo financiero federal, y este programa busca ayudar a llenar ese vacío.”

El programa “Dream Loan” impactará inmediatamente a 3 mil estudiantes indocumentados que ya estudian en alguno de los nueve campus de la Universidad de California. Y estará disponible para los de nuevo ingreso al comenzar el año próximo.
