FARMINGTON, N.M. – El próximo martes 16, la gente de Nuevo México tendrá la oportunidad de opinar sobre la propuesta de la Oficina de Administración de la Tierra (“Bureau of Land Management”), acerca de las emanaciones del gas natural de las perforaciones de petróleo y gas, en tierras federales.

La agencia dice que la regla está diseñada para reducir las fugas de metano y su liberación y combustión al aire, para reducir su desperdicio y las emisiones, además de ofrecer un rédito justo a los pagadores de impuestos.

Joshua Mantell, administrador de la campaña del carbón en “The Wilderness Society”, afirma que es importante que la gente acuda para expresar sus opiniones personalmente.

“El Bureau of Land management espera que la gente americana le diga por qué importa esto –afirmó Mantell–. Importa porque es un recurso compartido. El gas natural y el petróleo que se está extrayendo en tierras federales pertenece a cada uno de los americanos.”

Mantell comenta que Nuevo México tiene la mayor producción de petróleo y gas en tierras públicas, así que es el estado al que más afecta la propuesta.

Agrega que los mapas de la NASA muestran una nube de metano como del tamaño de Delaware sobre el norte del estado, y que en los años recientes Nuevo México ha perdido más de 42 millones de dólares en gas natural desperdiciado.

Joe Maestas, Consejero de la Ciudad de Santa Fe, opina que es importante que, si el “BLM” emite una nueva norma, la agencia también establezca un sistema de monitoreo sólido para asegurarse de que se respete.

“Deben pedir revisiones más frecuentes para asegurarse de que no hay fugas –sugirió–, que esos operadores estén usando la mejor tecnología, para aplicar todas las ventajas que la tecnología ofrece para manejar eficientemente el metano.”

La audiencia pública es el martes 16 de febrero de 1 a 4 de la tarde, en el “San Juan College”, en Farmington. El “BLM” dice que quienes quieran hablar deberán registrarse antes de que comience de la audiencia, y tendrán 3 minutos para exponer sus ideas.
