NEW YORK – Women have been creating new businesses at a rapid pace since the recession, according to a new report.

Women entrepreneurs have become a major force in the U.S. economy. Over the past nine years the number of women-owned firms has increased by 45 percent, five times faster than the number of businesses overall.

According to Julie Weeks, author of the American Express OPEN study, in that time period employment among all U.S. firms has declined by 1 percent.

"For women-owned firms, employment is up 18 percent and revenue is up 35 percent among women-owned firms and 27 percent among all U.S. firms," Weeks points out.

In addition, the report says women own 38 percent of all businesses, employing nearly 9 million people and generating more than $1.6 trillion in revenue.

Bob Bland, CEO and founder of Manufacture New York, says starting her own business allowed her to give herself and her employees secure, family-friendly jobs.

"Like a benefits system that allows for a certain amount of paid time off, for flexibility on important life changes like getting married or having a baby or a family member who's sick," she explains.

And, Bland says, it sets an example for her young daughter, allowing her to see her mother not only as a worker but also as a leader.

Weeks stresses one of the most significant findings of the report is that the number of businesses owned by women of color has more than doubled since 2007.

"Nearly 8 out of 10 new women-owned businesses have been launched by a woman of color, and that's nothing short of remarkable," she points out.

The report says nationally, since 2007, there have been more than 1,000 new, women-owned businesses launched every day.
