Children Can Find Helmet that Fits on Healthy Kids Day

SEATTLE - Kids can find the helmet that fits on Saturday at YMCAs in western Washington. The Ys are celebrating Healthy Kids Day, and Group Health Cooperative is joining them to promote bike safety by giving away 4,000 helmets.

Dr. Matt Handley, medical director for quality at Group Health, said children should make sure their helmets fit properly and are worn every time they bike to avoid injury.

"You've got to make sure that you wear it all the time rather than just on a big, long bike ride," he said. "Most kids that get into accidents get into accidents within a few blocks of their home."

Handley said more kids go to the emergency room for bicycle-related injuries than for other sports injuries. However, he added that biking is a healthy way to stay active and fit.

According to a recent study from Duke University, obesity rates among children age 2 to 19 have stayed the same in recent years, despite efforts to combat it. As summer approaches, Handley said biking is just one of many outdoor activities kids can enjoy if they are given the opportunity.

"Kids, when offered the chance to be physically active, love it," he said. "Not only that, the more active they are, the better learners they are in school. So it is the rising tide that lifts all boats. It leads kids to be happier, healthier, a healthy weight, and do better in school."

L. B. Kregenow, a competitive cyclist with Team Group Health who will be teaching kids about bike safety on Saturday, said parents also play an important role when it comes to keeping kids safe.

"Parents have got to wear their helmets when they're riding with their kids," she said. "It's more likely that the kids will do what mom or dad or older sibling is doing, so wandering off without a helmet protecting your noggin is a little counterproductive."

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. A list of participating YMCAs in Washington is online at YMCA.net/healthy-kids-day.
