Complaints Force BLM to Postpone Oil, Gas Lease Sale

SANTA FE, N.M. -- Under pressure from environmentalists, the Bureau of Land Management postponed a planned auction of 13,000 acres of oil and gas leases across New Mexico from July 20 to Sept. 1.

A coalition of groups calling itself the "Keep it in the Ground" movement said the BLM changed the location of the auction from Santa Fe to Roswell without proper public notice. According to Rebecca Sobel with WildEarth Guardians, the bureau only notified oil and gas representatives of the change.

“BLM claimed that on June 27 they issued an amendment to the sale notice, although we checked that paper out and did not see it,” Sobel said. "Regardless, it was a very small notice and did not issue an alert to those who had offered formal protest."

According to Sobel, it's not the first time the BLM has canceled or postponed lease sales when facing protests from the "Keep It in the Ground” movement. In recent months, it has also delayed sales planned in Utah, Montana and Washington, D.C.

BLM officials said the recent location change notice was proper, but they were postponing the sale in light of public concerns.

10 million acres of U.S. public lands have already been leased for oil and gas production, Sobel said, which will produce fossil fuels for decades. She said there is no need for any more oil, and the Obama Administration needs to end the current lease program. For Sobel, just getting the BLM to change the date is a move in the right direction.

"We consider it a partial victory that BLM is acknowledging the controversial nature of the federal leasing program and the need and interests of engaging the public and impacted communities,” she said.

The "Keep It in the Ground" movement has protested at every public lands oil and gas sale since Sept. 2015, according to Sobel, and they aim to not allow another acre to be leased under the program.
