High-Profile Politicians Flock to Nevada to Woo Voters

LAS VEGAS - Obama. Clinton. Kaine. Trump. Pence. These days, the Silver State is a veritable who's who of national politicians, all flocking here to woo voters ahead of the November election. It has just been announced that President Obama is coming to Nevada on Wednesday for a summit on water clarity at Lake Tahoe. Hillary Clinton will speak in Reno on Thursday, and her running mate, Tim Kaine was just in Las Vegas.

Courtney Kravitz, the development assistant with Battle Born Progress, an advocacy group that works for progressive causes, noted that the presidency could be won or lost in just a few so-called "purple" swing states such as Nevada, where voters gave Republicans control of the statehouse and Legislature two years ago, but went blue in 2008 and 2012.

"In 2014 it was definitely Republican up and down the ticket," she said. "But in the last two presidential races Nevadans voted for President Obama."

GOP candidate Donald Trump will hold a rally on Friday afternoon at the Southpoint Arena in Las Vegas, and is also holding a fundraising dinner that night at Harrah's Lake Tahoe. Meanwhile his VP pick, Mike Pence, held a town hall last Wednesday in Henderson.

Kravitz thinks Democrats should emphasize gun-violence prevention, immigration and the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court, and, above all, pound the pavement to get out the vote.

"A lot of people think that in 2014, more Democrats stayed home and didn't go to the polls," she added. "And that's why so many of the Republicans won. Typically during presidential years, more Democrats go and vote."

Retiring Senator Harry Reid will be back in the state Thursday night to be honored at Celebrate Progress Awards and fundraiser hosted by Battle Born Progress at the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas.
