MADISON, Wis. - As part of the World Dairy Expo in Madison on Oct. 6, the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will present a Global Dairy Symposium with leading experts from around the world sharing their insights on the dairy industry.

The panel of presenters will discuss the impact of global changes in the way dairy products are produced and marketed. Jen Pino-Gallagher, bureau director of the Division of Agricultural Development for DATCP. is excited about the event.

"The focus of the event is to give the participants a really good understanding of the trends that are leading changes in the production of dairy products around the world," she said, "as well as consumer trends in terms of what consumers around the globe are looking for in terms of dairy products."

Pino-Gallagher said the dairy industry faces never-before-seen challenges, but along with the challenges come new opportunities. She said the panel of experts will share the latest information about the growing use of information technology in the dairy industry, as well as the impact of global economic fluctuation.

According to Pino-Gallagher, the Global Dairy Symposium will have something of value for dairy producers, manufacturers, genetic companies, seed companies and consultants.

"The reason why I think that all of these groups will be interested is because we're going to touch on topics that relate to both the production of dairy products around the globe as well as the processing of dairy products as a finished good," she said, "so certainly this will be an event which will be of interest to dairy food manufacturers as well."

With today's online resources, she said, it's possible to gather this kind of information by visiting a lot of websites.

"But oftentimes, it's so much more useful to have somebody explain it to you in easily understood terms, and that's what we're hoping to present at the Global Dairy Symposium," she said. "In addition to the access to that type of information, there's also going to be tremendous opportunity to network with other leaders in the industry."

The event is free, but registration is required by Sept. 30 at datcp.wi.gov or eventbrite.com.
