CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The number for the nonpartisan election-protection hotline is 866-OUR-VOTE. The Election Protection Coalition is made up of more than a hundred groups working to protect the right to vote nationally.

Arusha Gordon, associate counsel with the Legal Mobilization Project at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, said they've already answered thousands of calls at 866-OUR-VOTE so far this year, and will be ready for whatever happens on election day.

"We believe that an educated voter is an empowered voter," she said. "And we also believe that protecting the integrity of our election means every eligible voter gets to cast a ballot that's counted."

The folks at 866-OUR-VOTE also can be reached online at 866ourvote.org. They also have hotlines in Spanish and a number of Asian languages, and they can take questions in Arabic.

The election-protection coalition expects to have volunteers in 866-OUR-VOTE T-shirts answering questions at polling places around the country.

Sindy Benavides, the national director for civic engagement and mobilization for the League of United Latin American Citizens said they've been doing outreach, telling people about the Spanish-language hotline. She said most of the information they're providing is pretty basic.

"Polling location, the polling hours, the type of IDs needed," Benavides said. "It's 888-VE-Y-VOTA or 888-839-8682."

Election Protection Coalition spokespeople say they expect Election Day to run smoothly, for the most part. They say voters should be prepared by knowing their rights. If something goes wrong they say contact the top election official at the precinct, and then call 866-OUR-VOTE.
