LAS VEGAS – Hundreds of Nevada workers in the fast-food, airport, home-care, higher-ed and child-care sectors are expected to walk off the job today and hold rallies in Las Vegas and in more than 300 other cities, part of a "National Day of Disruption" in the fight for a $15 minimum wage. The events start at 6 A.M. at the McDonald's across from the Mirage, and start back up at 5 P.M. with a march down the Strip.

Jose Macias with the Fight for 15 Las Vegas, said today is a symbolic day in the movement, the fourth anniversary of its first strike.

"Four years later, we have won a pathway to 15 for a living wage for over ten million workers, and this is going to be a very historic day for this movement," he said.

The minimum wage in Nevada right now is $8.25 an hour, $7.25 if your job offers health insurance. An initiative to raise it to $13 over time was filed and then pulled before this last election.

On November 8th, voters flipped control of both houses of the Nevada Legislature to the Democrats, and Macias said that gives him fresh hope for a bill to raise the state minimum wage.

"This legislative session could really work for a lot of families when it comes to decision making," he added. "I think we can push for better wages for workers. Now that we've put them in those seats, it's time for them to make sure that they work for our families."

President-elect Donald Trump has made conflicting statements about the idea of a federal minimum wage. But the Republican-controlled House of Representatives hasn't allowed a hearing or a vote on the matter for the past two years.
