SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Las estafas que tienen a los veteranos como su principal víctima están aumentando, de acuerdo al Servicio de Inspección Postal de los Estados Unidos (U.S. Postal Inspection Service), por lo que los inspectores postales están cerrando filas y haciendo equipo con la Red de Vigilancia de Estafas, de la AARP (AARP's Fraud Watch Network) en una nueva campaña llamada Operación Proteger a los Veteranos ("Operation Protect Veterans").

Varios encuestadores hicieron entrevistas entre veteranos y detectaron que el 80 por ciento ha sido blanco de defraudadores - y al menos 16 por ciento de hecho fueron sus víctimas.

Strat Maloma, especialista senior de programa y guía de California en la Red de Vigilancia del Fraude, dice que un engaño común consiste en que alguien llama a los veteranos y les ofrece una jugosa cantidad para comprarles su pensión futura o sus beneficios por discapacidad.

"Tal vez se encuentren en una situacion dificil y por eso pudieran sentir la tentacion. Ceden sus beneficios y jamas reciben compensacion alguna por ellos."

Las autoridades también recibieron muchas quejas sobre obras o grupos caritativos que dicen ayudar a los veteranos, pero sólo se están embolsando los donativos. Maloma dice que la gente también cobra por dar acceso a los archivos, lo que el Departamento de Asuntos de Veteranos de los Estados Unidos (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) brinda sin costo.

Y dice que ha visto la clásica estafa aleatoria que busca datos que puedan usarse para robar la identidad de la víctima.

"Los estafadores contactan a los veteranos diciendo que son de la V.A. y necesitan 'actualizar los archivos' de su informacion personal - ya sea el numero de su tarjeta de Social Security o algun archivo medico, o numeros de cuenta, y asi."

Y en otra estafa le ofrecen a la víctima - a cambio de una cantidad y algo de información personal - acceso a listas de empleos de empresas que supuestamente buscan contratar veteranos. En resumen, hay mucho de qué cuidarse.
