Grupos hispanos se están uniendo para alentar a las personas a tener conversaciones sobre el final de la vida con sus seres queridos antes de que ocurra una enfermedad o una tragedia. La Hispanic Heritage Foundation y el National Hispanic Council on Aging se están asociando con la organización sin fines de lucro Compassion & Choices para que las personas hablen sobre la planificación para el final de la vida, los cuidados paliativos, el soporte vital, el poder notarial médico y la ayuda médica para morir. La Dra. Yanira Cruz es presidenta y directora ejecutiva del National Hispanic Council on Aging.

"Hay personas que piensan que si hablamos sobre la muerte y sobre nuestros deseos cuando nos muramos, estamos llamando a la muerte. Pero realmente debemos de normalizar este tema. Y sentirnos cómodos conversando con nuestros seres queridos", expresó la Dra. Cruz.

California es hogar de más de 15 millones de latinos, casi el 40% de la población, con más de 1.2 millones de 65 años o más.

Antonio Tijerino es presidente y director ejecutivo de la Hispanic Heritage Foundation. Él dice que los latinos celebran a los que fallecieron en el Día de los Muertos, pero muchos se sienten incómodos hablando de la muerte de antemano. Y, sin embargo, dice, es imprescindible, especialmente porque muchos en la comunidad han sucumbido al COVID, y los hispanos tienen menos probabilidades que otros grupos de tener seguro médico.

"Estamos lidiando con estos problemas del final de la vida a una escala más alta que otros grupos. Sin embargo, somos los menos propensos a tener acceso a recursos e información para lidiar con ellos", mencionó también Tijerino.

Un informe de la American Hospice Association encontró que los latinos tienen menos probabilidades que las familias blancas de usar el hospicio, pero es más probable que lo necesiten. Un kit de herramientas gratuito para la guía de decisiones al final de la vida está disponible en inglés y español en el sitio web de Compassion & Choices.
