The midterm elections are only 30 days away, and early voting begins this Wednesday in most parts of Arizona. Voting advocates say now is the time to plan how and when you are going to vote, and the League of Women Voters' website - Vote411.org - is a good place to start.

On November 8, Arizonans will cast ballots in races for the U.S. House and Senate, state offices such as the governor and the Arizona Legislature, assorted county and local offices, as well as ten ballot initiatives.

Pinny Sheoran - president of the Arizona Chapter of the League of Women Voters - said Vote411 provides clear, unbiased information, particularly on the complex issues of the initiatives.

"This is an easy way in which they can find out what does that ballot initiative mean?" said Sheoran. "If I vote yes, what does it mean? If I vote no, what does it mean? And people who support it, what are they saying? And people who oppose it, what are they saying?"

Sheoran said Vote411 allows voters to find information on each state's election, with instructions on where to vote, rules for casting a ballot, and impartial profiles of all the candidates and issues.

The interactive guide covers elections in all 50 states, including Arizona.

Sheoran said even though there are multiple ways to vote, the vast majority of Arizonans are likely to fill out their ballots at home and drop them in the mailbox.

"Close to 80% of Arizonans are requesting mail ballots," said Sheoran. "And we urge our voters before you fill out that ballot, go to vote411, do the research and then complete your ballot."

She said it's important for mail-in voters to closely follow the instructions on the ballot to ensure that their vote is recorded.

"They must sign and put their phone numbers on mail ballots when they return it on the envelope," said Sheoran. "Because if something is missing, the elections people have a way to cure the ballot to make sure it gets counted."

Sheoran said she believes that with several high-profile races and key initiatives on the ballot, this year's Arizona midterms could see a record turnout.

Other Arizona election guides are available from the Arizona Secretary of State, the Citizens Clean Elections Commission, Ballotopedia and other sites.
