Renewed Concerns Over Wage Theft, Abuse at MN Development Site

Labor leaders said the owners of the Minnesota Vikings need to acknowledge issues involving subcontractors at a development site surrounding the team's headquarters.

They contended beyond wage theft, a recent assault should prompt corrective action.

In addition to overseeing the Vikings organization, the Wilf family owns the Viking Lakes development complex. Many workers involved in the project have accused subcontractor Absolute Drywall of wage theft. And there's a pending criminal case after a female employee reported being sexually assaulted while on the job.

Burt Johnson, general counsel for the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters, said Vikings ownership has been too silent.

"We owe it to her to hold accountable those who profit from hiring contractors that utilize exploitation of marginalized workers -- largely immigrant workers -- as part of their business model," Johnson asserted.

The assault allegations recently were detailed in a Minnesota Reformer report. The wage theft concerns have lingered over the course of the recently completed project. MV Ventures, which led the development and is owned by the Wilfs, did not respond to a request for comment before deadline, but it recently stated it was not made aware of the reported assault and has not been contacted by the state about the wage-theft issue.

Beyond their calls for accountability from the Wilfs, Johnson said they also want the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry to bring more urgency into the wage-theft investigation of Absolute Drywall.

"Every day that goes by, and these workers are not paid the wages that they were owed, is an injustice," Johnson argued.

Earlier this year, a number of workers hired by the drywall company and another subcontractor for the project said they were still owed more than $100,000 in unpaid wages.

In 2019, Minnesota adopted a new wage-theft law, but Johnson stressed ongoing issues with the development project need to be on the radar of legislative leaders.
