MN Unions on AG Race: Maintain Worker Protections

Public safety has been a major focal point in Minnesota's attorney general race and labor leaders hope issues such as worker protections are not overlooked.

On the campaign trail, Republican challenger Jim Schultz has narrowed in on crime, pledging to increase the office's criminal division if elected. DFL incumbent Keith Ellison has touted his record on addressing crime, while also renewing his pledge to stay focused on other areas, such as worker protections, citing his move to create a Wage Theft Unit.

Brad Lehto, secretary-treasurer of the Minnesota AFL-CIO, which has endorsed Ellison, said Minnesota's adoption of a wage theft law in 2019 is another positive step in recent years.

"It's really important to ordinary people that are getting taken advantage of," Lehto contended. "Whether it's by unscrupulous employers, contractors; whatever it may be."

The AFL CIO, which represents 300,000 members of more than 1,000 local unions in Minnesota, said worker and consumer protections should continue receiving attention from the office. In a statement, Schultz said he would uphold the wage theft law and fight for worker safety, while noting his endorsement from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49.

Lehto argued any suggestions of pulling resources from certain divisions of the office to focus on crime would be shortsighted at a time when working Minnesotans are struggling with inflation. He noted the state's efforts on wage theft have helped families get back money they have earned, as they try to make ends meet.

"It has put almost $300,000 into the hands of workers," Lehto reported. "That's very important, and it has been union workers and nonunion workers."

Recent polls have shown a tightening race for attorney general in Minnesota, with Ellison and Schultz tied just a few weeks before the election.
