Labor Leaders Work to Get Out the Vote in Nevada

Labor groups are fanning out across the state, knocking on doors ahead of the midterm election next Tuesday, asking voters to elect candidates who will fight for working families. The groups rallied in Las Vegas on Wednesday, calling for big voter turnout - with an eye toward kitchen table issues such as high prescription drug prices and affordable child care.

Lee Saunders, national president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said union members are doing their part to motivate voters.

"When we are together, holding hands together, marching with one another, knocking on those doors together, we can, and we will win. Make no mistake about it," said Saunders.

Nevada has multiple high-profile races this year. The tight race between incumbent Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., and former Republican state Attorney General Adam Laxalt could very well dictate control of the U.S. Senate. Gov. Steve Sisolak will face Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo.

The race for Secretary of State pits Democrat Cisco Aguilar against Republican Jim Marchant, who posed with a group of fake Trump electors in 2020 and continues to claim without evidence the last election was rigged.

Cassie Charles, campaign director of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada Action, praised the Sisolak administration's efforts to plow money from the American Rescue Plan into building more affordable housing.

"It is long past time to talk about the housing crisis and prioritize working families," Charles said. "We need strong leaders with a working-class background to continue focusing on affordable housing in our state."

All registered voters should have received their ballot in the mail. Early in-person voting also is underway and runs through Friday. Nevada also allows people to register to vote on Election Day.
