Recession Putting the Squeeze on Illinois Food Banks

November 27, 2009

CHICAGO - This holiday season isn't turning out to be quite so happy for many Illinoisans. The economic downturn has caused thousands to lose their jobs, and food banks and shelters across the state say the demand is outpacing the supply. In fact, the Illinois Hunger Coalition is reporting record numbers of middle-class Illinoisans seeking assistance.

Executive director Diane Doherty says the increasing demand is being met with a dwindling number of volunteers and donations - partially because former volunteers are experiencing the process from a different vantage point.

"The people who are calling are saying, 'You know, a year ago I actually gave turkeys away' or 'A year ago, I volunteered. This year now I'm looking for a place.' It's just a reversal of fortune that so many people are facing."

According to Doherty, one in eight Illinoisans receive food stamps and 12 percent of people in the state have experienced food insecurity. Because of this, she is encouraging Illinoisans to contact their legislators about the effect budget cuts are having on programs that provide people with food, shelter and other help during their time of need.

"If people are not able to get out, if they don't have the resources to donate anything, they can just pick up the phone and call their legislators and say to them, 'We really need to make sure that everyone can get the help that they need.'"

Doherty says the Illinois Hunger Coalition is helping the needy walk away with more than just a bag of food. The organization screens visitors for all federally-funded nutrition and medical programs and helps them get cash assistance, too, if they are eligible.
