New State Suicide Prevention Plan Released

CONCORD, NH - A new year brings a new plan from professionals working to prevent suicide. The New Hampshire Suicide Prevention Council, a group of public and private agencies and individuals, is working to raise awareness of suicide prevention through education, and to increase treatment services. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 34 in New Hampshire; second only to car accidents.

It is also a growing concern for older residents and veterans, according to Nancy Rollins, associate commissioner for New Hampshire's Department of Health & Human Services, and Council vice-chair.

"Suicide does affect the entire population, and it has no boundaries with regards to age, race or gender. It impacts not only the individual, but certainly their families and their communities."

Most suicides can be prevented, says Rollins, but the first step is to be aware of the warning signs, and that means greater involvement by communities and individuals.

"The most important thing is to understand the need to connect with individuals who are experiencing despair, and to make sure that services are available; that they can get connected both to prevention services as well as treatment services."

Often, certain stigmas that are attached to depression and mental health prevent people from seeking help, according to suicide prevention advocates. The state's original suicide prevention plan was created in 2004 and since then, the state has been awarded several grants and was recognized nationally for its work with veterans.

Resources for information about suicide prevention and services is online at www.theconnectproject.org.
