PORTLAND, Ore. - While the shortage of nurses in Oregon is critical, the shortage of Spanish-speaking nurses is even more critical, and Linfield College has made it a priority to change that. The school of nursing launched an extra effort to recruit students from Latino backgrounds, and its enrollment among that demographic has more than tripled, from 2.6 percent in the 2002-2003 school year, to 8.4 percent last year.

Peggy Wros, associate dean of the nursing school, says greater diversity has been good for the nursing program, and also for the Linfield campus.

"What we've found is that the students from underrepresented populations are really finding their voices, and they're becoming leaders on the campus and making change. It's not that they're just getting by and getting through - it's that they're thriving."

Latinos make up more than ten percent of the Oregon population, and more than 20 percent in some counties, but only one percent of the health care workforce. Wros says they do extensive outreach to teens and young adults about health care careers. Much of the focus is on making school affordable.

"The strength of our program is that we have the scholarship outreach administrator, who's been focused on scholarships and other financial supports. There's money out there, if students have help to figure out how to access it."

People of any ethnic background get better care when they can communicate with their caregivers, she adds, and the bilingual nursing students have had their pick of jobs after graduation.
