Forty Days of Prayer or Protest During Lent?

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Lent is the 40-day period before Easter, a time some Christians use to soul-search, reflect and repent for their misdeeds. For others, however, it is a time to get louder. Anti-choice protesters are launching a "40 Days of Prayer" campaign, with protests in Missouri and across the nation, calling for an end to legalized abortion.

The Rev. Rebecca Turner, executive director of Faith Aloud, considers the protesters' intent misguided; she says they are harrassing women during a difficult time.

"The Christian season of Lent is a sacred time of self-examination, personal reflection and repentance. It's not a time to criticize and shame other people."

Christians should use this period to find ways to give their time, Turner counsels, and to help others in their communities without judging them. Opponents of abortion rights say their protests during Lent are peaceful.

Turner notes that anti-choice advocates won't be the only Christians praying during Lent.

"I will be praying that women always have the freedom to make their own decisions without harassment from people who don't know them."

Lent began Feb. 17 and ends the day before Easter, on April 3.
