Las enfermedades de transmisión sexual alcanzan a los adolescentes de Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa - Las estimaciones más certeras apuntan a que las enfermedades de transmisión sexual están aumentando entre los adolescentes del estado. Pero se están haciendo esfuerzos por mantenerlos a salvo de estos padecimientos.

"Empieza a hablar y haz que te examinen" es el mensaje de una campaña inspirada por MTV y apoyada por varias organizaciones, como Planned Parenthood of the Heartland (Paternidad Planeada de Heartland), para animar a los adolescentes a que se hagan exámenes anuales para detectar enfermedades de transmisión sexual. De acuerdo a las más recientes estadísticas de Iowa, casi 4,000 adolescentes han dado positivo a Chlamydia, gonorrea o sífilis.

Kirsten Colt de Planned Parenthood (Paternidad Planeada) dice que muchas de las infecciones de transmisión sexual no se manifiestan con síntomas.

"Así que la gente anda por todos lados pensando erróneamente que no tiene infección alguna, y el peligro de eso es que contagien a cualquiera con quien tengan relaciones sexuales."

Colt menciona las infecciones más comúnmente encontradas recientemente en los jóvenes adolescentes de Iowa.

"Las infecciones de transmisión sexual más comunes que hay son Chlamydia, gonorrea - vemos muchas de éstas - pero también bastantes casos de virus de papiloma humano."

Colt comenta que la excusa que escucha más seguido de los adolescentes para no hacerse exámenes, es el miedo a que les duela. Afirma que el procedimiento sólo es un simple examen de orina, y puede ser practicado en el consultorio de cualquier médico, departamento de salud o en una locación de Planned Parenthood. Colt agrega que el mejor momento para examinarse es ahora.
