PORTLAND, Ore. - Their unemployment rate is the highest it's been since the 1940s, and they don't have as much time as younger folks to recover from the Great Recession. But AARP says most Oregonians over age 50 are not giving up.

Rob Romasco, the national president-elect of AARP, was in Oregon recently. He told business leaders that older workers are busting the myths that they're not flexible or tech-savvy enough for today's jobs. In fact, he says, they have more than just financial reasons to stay in the workforce. In AARP member surveys, he says their message has been clear - they're "not done yet."

"That 'I'm not done yet' is a very strong and prevalent attitude. And I think that's a reservoir of energy, a desire to do things that matter. But the 'I'm not done yet' also has the corollary of, 'I want to make sure that this society is vital for my children.'"

Of Oregonians over age 45 who are in the workforce, 70 percent say they intend to work past the traditional retirement age. So, Romasco says the other half of the equation is finding employers who appreciate their skills, drive and loyalty.

"This is a deep, deep recession, and it's going to take a while for us to climb our way out of it. And we should think about the mature worker, the older worker, as a tremendous asset and resource to help with that process, as opposed to a burden that needs to be carried."

AARP is predicting that voters over age 45 will determine the outcome of the midterm elections. Romasco notes older voters now make up two-thirds of the electorate. Nationwide, 80 percent of them say they intend to cast ballots, compared to 54 percent of younger voters.
