Phoenix, AZ - Tax season has begun, and whether you use an accountant or a computer program, or try to file your returns on your own, it can be an expensive and complicated process. But thanks to the AARP Foundation, Arizonans do not have to go it alone, and help is available for free.

Frank Perazelli is the state volunteer coordinator for the AARP Tax Aide program. He says 82 locations around the state are staffed with more than 1,100 volunteer counselors who are kept up-to-date on changing tax laws.

"Volunteers are re-certified every year. They must pass an IRS exam. In addition to the preparation, there is a second set of eyes that do a quality review. So every return we process has been seen by at least two people."

Most returns are filed electronically, and many taxpayers will receive their refund within a week or two. Perazelli says the volunteer preparers will help people claim credits they may be eligible for, from Arizona property tax credits for low-income seniors to tax credits for parents.

"If they qualify for an Earned Income Tax Credit because they have two or three children and their income is low enough, we'll obviously guide them in that direction."

Perazelli says several of AARP's tax help locations have evening and weekend hours to accommodate different schedules. Some also accept appointments. Just be sure to bring as much of your information as possible, he adds.

"Typically people should bring last year's tax return, all of the tax forms they have received this year, and any other donations or expenses they might need if they were going to itemize."

Perazelli says the Tax Aide program serves mostly seniors and low-and-middle income families, but there are no age restrictions and no income limits, and AARP membership is not required.

Tax Aide locations statewide are listed at www.aztax-aide.org.
