BOULDER, Co. - The University of Colorado is prepping for a visit from President Barack Obama later today. The President is scheduled to speak at the Boulder campus on student loans and higher-education affordability. But at least some students are hoping the President doesn't forget about an issue dear to Coloradans - the environment.

Meaghan Daly is a Ph.D. student in environmental studies at CU. She says that, even though the economy has been rocky the last four years, she hopes Obama will balance short-term solutions to things like higher gas prices or energy independence with long-term environmental benefits.

"It doesn't have to be a choice between the environment or the economy. There are lots of opportunities to push positive growth in both areas forward."

One thing the president hasn't been able to do is stop subsidies for big oil and gas producers, and divert that money to renewable energy sources. Daly plans to attend the speech, and she says she's disappointed Obama hasn't been able to push some of his proposed environmental reforms through Congress.

"We can't give up trying to address these issues, despite the fact that there's a lot of opposition in Congress."

A new poll by the group Small Business Majority says 73 percent of small-business owners it surveyed believe tax breaks for oil and gas companies should end, and 60 percent support the idea even if it meant another hike in gas prices.

The Boulder Daily Camera is reporting that protesters from both the left and right plan to be at tonight's presidential event. Anti-fracking advocates from Longmont, representatives from the Occupy Boulder movement, and Boulder County Republicans all plan to be on campus before the speech, which begins at 6 p.m. at the Coors Event Center.

Results of the poll mentioned are at www.smallbusinessmajority.org.
