PHOENIX - AARP's national campaign to find ways to strengthen Social Security and Medicare has already heard from more than a million people. Now AARP has commissioned liberal and conservative experts to evaluate dozens of reform proposals for the two programs, and is making the results public.

Former AARP Arizona state president Ritch Steven says it's the education phase of the program called "You've Earned a Say."

"We're trying to make sure that everybody understands what these programs are, what they do, how they're financed, and how important they are to all Americans and their children."

AARP is urging people to use the information on their website, EarnedaSay.org, to make up their own minds on how Social Security and Medicare should be changed.

Once this "options" phase of the national conversation is completed, Steven says, the next step will be discussions with candidates in the November elections.

"All federal candidates will have an opportunity to weigh in with their position on these two critical programs, and we will put them into a voter's guide that will be online and available to everyone, members and non-members alike."

Steven says AARP has the credibility to tackle Social Security and Medicare reform because the organization has always defended the programs and its members represent every political viewpoint.

"We welcome them all to the table to participate in this discussion. We think they all can add value to that, and that's how you create a bipartisan solution."

Recent estimates show Social Security will only be able to provide full benefits until 2033 if nothing changes, and Medicare Part A hospital benefits would have to be reduced in 2024.
