PHOENIX – Durante verano es cuando el tráfico se pone más pesado en las autopistas, especialmente entre el 4 de julio y Labor Day. Este verano, la AARP ofrece un descuento en el curso de manejo a cualquier empleado, actual o antiguo, de un distrito escolar o universidad. El coordinador de la AARP del Estado de Arizona, Jerry Hartley, dice que el curso está diseñado para ayudar a los conductores de más de 50 años a que se adapten al envejecimiento.

"Adaptar las técnicas de manejo a tener menos vista, menos oído, menos rapidez para reaccionar, funciones cognitivas mentales más lentas en comparación a las que tenías cuando empezaste a conducir."

Dice que la idea es que la gente esté consciente de sus fortalezas y limitaciones, y que use sus destrezas para enfrentar sus limitaciones. También añade que tomar el curso podría hacer que muchos conductores fueran elegibles a un descuento en su seguro automovilístico, igual que cuando eran adolescentes.

"Allá, cuando teníamos educación vial en high-school… por qué? porque el adolescente era un alto riesgo, pagaba primas muy elevadas para tener seguro. Pero si tomabas educación vial, bueno, de veras que bajabas las primas."

El curso está abierto para quien quiera todo el año, a un costo de $12.00 para miembros de la AARP y de $14.00 para los no miembros. Hartley explica por qué es tan bajo el costo.

Hartley afirma que la Promoción de Apreciación del Educador es un nudo para los profesores que fundaron la AARP. Con el descuento para educadores vigente, el curso de cuatro horas cuesta únicamente $5.00 desde ahora, hasta finales de agosto. Hartley dice que puede uno inscribirse en aarp.org/findacourse.
