NY Urged to Up Carbon Reduction Limits Post-Sandy

NEW YORK - Citing Sandy damages that run as high as $40 billion, local conservation groups say New York can't afford to wait for the next "superstorm" to deal with climate change.

Ross Gould, air and energy program director for Environmental Advocates of New York, says Governor Andrew Cuomo has an opportunity today to come up with a timely solution that puts the "REGGI" state with the worst carbon emission problem at the forefront instead, referring to the nine-state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.

"New York should step up and put us on a path to reduce 20 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2020, and then the long-term goal of 80 percent by the year 2050."

The first meetings of REGGI compact states since Superstorm Sandy are taking place today in Albany and Boston.

Gould sees this as a chance for Governor Cuomo to follow up on his powerful post-Sandy message, that changing weather patterns are now a reality in New York and the nation. He believes the governor can drive home the point that decision-makers need to be planning ahead to reduce the risk of future superstorms.

"The governor has gotten people to talk about climate change. And what we need to do is, we need to take these strong words and recognition that climate change is a problem, and actually put them into strong policies to reduce climate pollution."

Under REGGI, New York and eight other states in the Northeast and Midwest cap pollution and then charge companies for their carbon emissions. Gould says it's vital that New York acts now to tighten pollution limits, because REGGI is setting new goals next month that will lock in those pollution caps for years to come.

The Albany meeting takes place at 10 a.m. at NYSERDA Headquarters, 17 Columbia Circle, Albany.
