Minnesota Ranks 4th in the Nation for Child Well-Being

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota continues to be one of the best states in the nation for children, but the latest snapshot on their well-being shows some areas of concern. The state is ranked fourth overall in the latest KIDS COUNT Data Book from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, but one of the areas that worsened over the past year was the number of children in poverty, which grew to 15 percent.

According to Stephanie Hogenson, outreach specialist with Children's Defense Fund Minnesota, that can have consequences.

"Children who live in poverty are more likely to live in poverty as adults, so we know that that is an indicator that we need to keep watching and ensure that those children have what they need to be successful in early childhood, teenagers, and then ensure success as adults," she declared.

Another area where Minnesota saw a slide was in the number of fourth-graders proficient in reading, while nationally that number improved.

Also of concern, said Hogenson, is that the state's ranking on children's health dropped from seventh in the country to 15th.

That was "primarily due to the fact that we were one of few states where children without health insurance remained unchanged," she said. "Many states have decreased their number of children without health insurance, where our number is still maintaining at about 80,000 children."

State lawmakers did make investments in early childhood provisions this past session, but Hogenson said there is more to do, such as making sure those families who need child care assistance can get help.

"Fully funding that program is something that would help alleviate the effects not only of poverty on our youngest children, but also improve employment outcomes for parents, knowing that in order to work they need child care," she stated.

The waiting list for child care assistance in the state is currently at about 6,000.
