FIRE ISLAND, N.Y. – Verizon, one of the nation's largest phone companies, is planning to replace traditional phone lines destroyed by Hurricane Sandy with an alternative, wireless system.

But some critics are saying, "Hold the phone!"

Instead of replacing old, copper-wire land lines in storm-battered parts of the Northeast with its superior fiber-optic technology, Verizon has been given permission to put in something called Voice Link in parts of Fire Island. ...(Read More)

Jail Break? FCC Moves on Prison Phone Call Gouging NEW YORK - In a move at the very end of the year, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken a step toward examining the high prices families pay to stay in touch by phone with loved ones behind bars. By announcing a Notice of Proposed Rule Making, the FCC has finally responded to an effort of more than 10 years urging the agency to look into prison telephone service contracts.

Steven Renderos, a national organizer around the issue for the Media Action Grassroots Network, says the step forward is "great."

"The real victims of the high cost of these phone calls are the families that have to pay the phone bills. ...(Read More)

Media Debate: More Newsrooms Avoid “Illegal Immigrants” SAN ANTONIO - Adjective or adverb? More and more newsrooms are debating how best to use the word "illegal" when referring to residents who did not move to the United States with proper documentation.

From CNN to The Huffington Post, major outlets that have been trying to expand their Latino audiences are avoiding the term "illegal immigrant." The San Antonio Express-News, whose reach extends into Mexico, decided two years ago that the term was not consistent with how the paper described others suspected of breaking laws. Managing editor Jamie Stockwell says it's like calling someone accused of violating traffic laws an "illegal driver."

"So, the correct way to describe a person's immigration status - when that information is relevant - is to say that a person is in the country illegally. ...(Read More)

An Internet, “If You Can Keep It” NEW YORK - Founding Father Benjamin Franklin is said to have answered a question about what kind of rule the Constitutional Convention of 1787 had created by saying, "A republic, if you can keep it." Advocates working to keep the Internet free from restrictions and regulations say, in effect, the same thing: It's up to Internet users to keep it free.

Last winter's effort by Congress to pass bills called SOPA and PIPA to regulate the Internet was resoundingly defeated by an unprecedented outpouring of pushback, facilitated by the Net itself. John Perry Barlow, a founder of a digital freedom watchdog group, says the next assault on the Internet could come from government or industry or some other party that won't necessarily play by the rules.

The bill - HR 3523, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) - is, in a way, a successor to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA), the anti-piracy measures that were shot down in January after an outcry over censorship concerns.

The issue with CISPA is privacy.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday, aims to stop the $39 billion deal, which would combine the nation's second- and fourth-largest wireless carriers. The new entity would leapfrog over number one Verizon Wireless and create what critics called a "virtual duopoly," with Sprint Nextel a distant third. ...(Read More)

Is "Job-Killing" AT&T T-Mobile Merger a Dropped Call? NEW YORK - Experts may differ over the exact number, but if AT&T is allowed to swallow up T-Mobile and become the largest cellphone service provider in the country, some 20,000 jobs are likely to be eliminated - most held by T-Mobile workers. As the country struggles to avoid a double-dip recession, Chance Williams of the media watchdog group FreePress.net says approving the takeover does not make sense.

"It's 100 percent clear that this merger is a job-killer. "...(Read More)
