"Some species of mosquito, they only need, like, an inch of water, so water standing in the bottom of a flower pot or in clogged gutters, or in children's toys that are left out in the yard, these are all potential breeding places for mosquitoes," he pointed out.

So, if the deadline is missed, are the effects on Illinois and across the country really like falling off a cliff?

Jared Bernstein, senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, says "no," because the expiring tax cuts wouldn't be apparent until 2014, when people filed their 2013 tax returns. As long as a deal is on the way, he says, we can avoid the worst, even if the deal isn't signed by the Monday deadline.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that's why parents and day-care providers need to make sure children are not accidentally left behind in overheated cars.

Kate Carr, president of Safe Kids Worldwide, says eight children died inside cars in the first week of August, and it happens year-round.

Tammy Gallow, a registered nurse and dietitian, says it's absolutely critical to get a student's day off to a healthy start.

"There's been so many research studies dating back to the 1950s that have shown, over and over again, that children who eat breakfast perform much better than their peers who skip that meal."

The American Heart Association says eating a diet high in fat, sodium and sugar can lead to obesity and other health problems, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
Health Care Reform Shows Signs of Saving Medicare Budget CHICAGO - The single biggest long-term federal budget problem is the cost of Medicare, and it's a big concern in Illinois with more than 1.5 million people depending on it for health care. However, according to an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, health care reform is already slowing the growth of Medicare costs, a crucial change that could save the program from bankruptcy.
NOW Calls on Clear Channel to Pull Plug on Limbaugh CHICAGO - The National Organization for Women has stepped into the Rush Limbaugh controversy, calling on Clear Channel to "pull the plug on Limbaugh's microphone."

NOW president Terry O'Neil issued a statement saying Limbaugh was trying to shame a young woman from coming forward and speaking her mind, and that calling her a "slut" and a "prostitute" on the air is unacceptable.

Ruthie Fuller, a member of NOW, says Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke did nothing wrong when she testified on behalf of insurance-provided birth control. Fuller says singling her out by the talk-radio host felt like an attack on all women.

The researchers polled adults about childhood preferences such as toys and games, and found that the girls who had preferred traditional boys' activities and the boys who liked such things as dolls had experienced more abuse, from parents and others.

Consumer Groups: Medical Devices Need More Oversight CHICAGO - People might be surprised to learn that the medical devices surgically implanted in their bodies are subject to almost no government regulation, testing or monitoring. The Consumers Union is one group looking to change that and, along with other patient safety advocates, is asking Congress to step up the regulation of such medical devices as hip replacements and heart stents.

Lisa McGiffert, who directs the Consumers Union "Safe Patient Project," says seniors are especially at risk, since surgical complications can be more serious later in life.
