Clean Air Cabs Get a Boost in New York

December 7, 2006

New York, NY - Taxi operators who made an investment in environmentally friendly hybrid-electric cabs are getting a break. The New York City Council voted to extend the operational life of those cabs, which means operators can keep them on the street longer and get a bigger return on their investment. The cabs will also carry "Clean Air Vehicle" labels, according to Bob Muldoon of the Sierra Club.

"There are currently about 280 'clean air taxis' on the street. This will help bring these taxis out of hiding, show them off to the public and encourage the taxi industry to buy more of them."

Muldoon believes that sort of public education helps get the message across that hybrid-electric vehicles aren't just clean, but also practical.

"It just tells the public that we are making steps towards a cleaner taxi fleet, which is important, especially in this age of climate change, global warming and air pollution. We need to deal with it right now."

Muldoon hopes the legislation will encourage more of New York's 13,000 taxicabs to make the switch to cleaner hybrid-electric vehicles, which get better gas mileage and help prevent global warming pollution.

The council also voted for labeling and extending life for wheelchair-accessible cabs to encourage more operators to invest in them, too.
