Columbus, OH - A vast majority of Americans underestimate the costs of long-term care, and about half of Ohioans mistakenly think Medicare will cover the costs. Those are the results of a new AARP poll, and Kathy Keller of AARP Ohio says the holidays should be a good time for facilitating that all-important family discussion with older relatives, about making some crucial decisions.

"We're hoping that as people get together, they will have conversations about their preferences regarding long-term care."

Keller stresses that advance planning is absolutely crucial when it comes to long-term care.

"What we hope is that people will start speaking with each other about their preferences before any immediate crisis, where something happens and you have to make decisions right away."
