Home for the Holidays - in a FEMA Trailer

December 18, 2006

Las Vegas, NV - The Children's Defense Fund has teamed up with Malaak Compton-Rock, wife of comedian Chris Rock, to call on all Nevada residents to remember the victims of hurricane Katrina this holiday season. She says there are still missing people, children separated from their parents and very few mental health facilities.

"We're dealing with horrible side-effects like mental illness, please do not give up on these children."

She adds that children are being raised by siblings and are not going to school.

"Only half the schools are open. Only half the hospitals are open. The mental health services are depleted."

In New Orleans, the reconstruction is still moving slowly. According to Amy Liu of the Brookings Institution there's a pressing housing shortage.

"Because of the limited supply of housing at this time, even people who want to come back are having a really hard time finding places to live."
