Lawyer: Wyoming Could Become a Magnet for "Worst Boss" Winners

December 26, 2006

Casper, WY - "Worst boss" contest winners could learn to really like Wyoming, according to a Casper lawyer who has reviewed a proposed bill the State Legislature will take up next month. Rich Jamieson explains the legislation takes away a worker's right to sue in the rare case of an on-the-job injury that's not just an accident.

"It's not very often that a supervisor intentionally requires his men to engage in activity that the supervisor knows has a high probability of causing death or injury, but when they do, they should be held responsible."

Jamieson notes that Wyoming has the highest per-capita workplace death rate in the country, and he believes the state should be looking at ways to lose that macabre ranking.

"I think we should be looking towards legislation that promotes a more safe work environment, this legislation does not."

Jamieson feels the so-called "co-employee immunity" is exactly the wrong thing to do. However, backers of the bill say it's designed to lessen what they believe is too much employer liability.
