Big Biz Joining Effort to Stop Global Warming

Ten major US corporations will join national environmental groups today to announce a major effort against global warming. Big names like Alcoa, Caterpillar and GE are among those calling for reductions in global warming pollutants. Francis Beinecke, director of the Natural Resources Defense CouncilNRDC), says the nation needs both short and long term emission reduction targets to combat the growing threat.

"We have the technology and the know-how to move our economy forward and reduce global warming emissions safely and affordably, starting right now."

While Nevada has not been in the forefront when it comes to renewable energy, Theo Spence with NRDC believes the state could be in the right place now.

"When the governor was running for office, renewable energy was one of his major planks. People are starting to understand that there's a lot of money to be made, with private equity firms pouring literally billions of dollars in investment funds into clean energy, and I think Nevada has a lot of potential."

Environmentalists are also hoping President Bush will extend an energy efficiency tax incentive, and if he does, Spence says Nevada is among the states that could profit.

"As the governor has said there's geothermal resources in Nevada, but there's also a tremendous untapped solar energy potential."

President Bush is expected to concentrate on energy as one of the major themes in this week's State of the Union address.
