New Generation of NM Voters Calls for Change in Politics

February 9, 2007

Young voters in New Mexico say they want more accountability in and access to the state's political system. They are planning a rally at the Capitol to show support for the bipartisan ethics and campaign finance reform package that was introduced in the legislature last week.

Keenan King, with the League of Young Voters, says the group is eager to make a difference.

"People want more access to government, they want to be heard. By making government more accessible, by allowing young people to run that may not have financial means, that's what these reforms are doing."

The reform package includes public financing of state elections and a ban on gifts from lobbyists. King says political scandals have motivated young people to move toward change.

"We need these reforms for New Mexico. All the data we have show ethics, overwhelmingly right now in New Mexico, is the most important issue."

The rally begins at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 9 on the west steps of the state capitol in Santa Fe.
