A new statewide campaign is underway to voice Iowans' opposition to President George Bush's plan to escalate the war in Iraq. A newly formed Iowa coalition announced its intentions this morning at the State Capitol, to join the national group Americans Against Escalation in Iraq.

The Iowa contingent includes trade unions, religious groups and civic organizations, many groups that usually don't find themselves involved with international issues. Spokesman Phillip Cryan says the organization supports the recent resolution passed by the Iowa Senate.

"The Iowa Senate has approved a resolution expressing grave concerns about President Bush's misbegotten plan, and the Iowa House is considering the same resolution. Now it's time for Representative Latham and all our elected officials in Washington to follow these state legislators."

Cryan says the coalition is urging Iowa's Congressional delegation to vote for the resolution opposing the escalation.

"Our elected officials in Washington need to stand and be counted. Either they stand with 70 percent of the American public, the Iraq study group, senior military leaders, clergy, veterans -- or they stand with President Bush and a tried-and-failed strategy."

Cryan claims the President's disregard for public opinion has become so extreme that many organizations traditionally focused on domestic issues are now turning their attention to stopping further escalation of the Iraq war.
