Hundreds of Coloradans Rally to Call Attention to "Health Care Crisis"

February 27, 2007

Hundreds of Coloradans from across the state gathered at the capitol Monday to call attention to what they say is a health care crisis in Colorado. They asked lawmakers to expand access and increase affordability of health care.

Denise de Percin, with the Colorado Consumer Health Initiative, says it's a problem facing working families, businesses and the state.

"It's a crisis for public programs, it's a crisis for the uninsured, and it's a crisis in private insurance. We need to figure out how to put our heads together and have a solution."

A Blue Ribbon Health Care Commission is meeting throughout the year to determine ways to increase coverage for Coloradans and reduce costs.

Nearly 800,000 Coloradans do not have health insurance. de Percin adds, when working families are unable to afford health coverage, the problem is great.

"Colorado, not unlike other states, really is facing a crisis in health care because almost 85 percent of the uninsured are in working families."

Estimates show nearly a third of Coloradans either have no health insurance or do not have enough.
