Minnesota Yearly Food Drive Underway Today

March 1, 2007

The state's largest yearly food drive gets underway today. Minnesota's "March Food Drive," is designed to stock over 260 food shelves across the state. Spokeswoman Sue Kainz with Minnesota FoodShare says it's a big deal this year, because food shelf use is at a record high.

"What we do is set a goal, and try to restock food shelves for the spring and summer months. The 2007 campaign has a goal of nine million pounds and dollars combined.

The numbers reflect a growing need, especially among working families trying to balance various financial obligations.

"It's just normal, everyday people who find themselves, number one, in an emergency or crisis. Maybe they've lost a job. Maybe, they've had hours cut. Maybe, something happened with their health care. A lot of the really wonderful, good manufacturing jobs have gone away, especially in Greater Minnesota. And, the jobs that are replacing them just are not paying the same.

Kainz says Minnesota food shelf users are a diverse group.

"Over 50 percent represent children. Of the adults who use food shelves, about 40 percent of them are employed. The largest and newest group of people using food shelves are senior citizens."

Minnesota food shelves distributed more than 42 million pounds of food last year. And, while a growing number of Minnesotans rely on food shelves, Kainz is optimistic that others will open their hearts and pocketbooks again this year.
