Call to Shift Focus of Farm Bill to Rural America

March 1, 2007

Small towns across Colorado and the rest of the country have been struggling economically for years. Rural analysts say as Congress debates what to do with the 2007 Farm Bill, it could be the last opportunity to turn rural America around. Chuck Hassebrook with the Center for Rural Affairs says farm legislation has shortchanged small town Colorado for years by focusing so much attention on mega-farms and ranches.

"What we're proposing is that the next farm bill change that and make fundamental commitment to invest in our future by supporting small business, beginning farmers and value-added agriculture. This is a critical time to do it because if we just let the current trends in rural America go another decade, it may be too late to change it."

The Farm Bill is up for reauthorization this year.
