Clean Energy-Oregon's Next Economic Boom?

March 14, 2007

Clean energy could fuel Oregon's next economic boom, according to some of the state's leading venture capitalists who are testifying before a Senate committee today. They say developing a clean energy industry would attract businesses, create jobs and bring millions in additional revenue to the state. Steven Saltzman with Intel Capital says with resources like biofuels in Eastern and Central Oregon, wave energy at the coast, and wind power in the Gorge, Oregon's poised to reap the benefits.

"This really is a broad statewide economic opportunity that we really feel we can't afford to walk away from."

The bill (SB-373) would require electric utilities in Oregon to get a quarter of their electricity from renewable sources by 2025.

Saltzman believes that from wind to wave to biofuels, Oregon's ready.

"This is one of the few economic initiatives that actually has the opportunity to lift just about every region of the state."

The Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources is meeting today at 3:00 p.m. in Salem.
