Renewable Energy Fans: "25 by 25" Really Adds Up for Wisconsin's Economy

March 20, 2007

Wisconsin's college basketball teams may be out of the "Sweet 16," but 25 could also be a winning number for the Badger State, according to renewable energy fans. A summit starting today in the nation's capital is calling for 25 percent of American energy to come from renewable energy sources by 2025, and asking states to take the lead. Bill Holland with the Apollo Alliance says in addition to cutting global warming pollution, Wisconsin can score big by generating agricultural and manufacturing jobs if the state makes an investment now.

"Let's not just say we need to have renewable energy and renewable fuels in the state, but we really need to attract the manufacturing sector and those sorts of jobs to Wisconsin."

In his energy initiative, Governor Doyle has endorsed the "25 by 25" plan. He's proposing Wisconsin budget $50 million for renewable energy research and promotion.

Holland notes more than 1,200 Wisconsin businesses in the struggling manufacturing sector are poised to profit from renewable energy production.

"These sorts of new energy technologies are gonna invest in exactly those sectors that Wisconsin needs help in, such as manufacturing or agriculture. A program like 25 by 25 is gonna target investment to exactly those sort of firms, and it's up to the state to take the lead on these emerging technologies."
