How can Minnesota get some "new blood" down on the farm? A Minnesotan will testify before a U.S. House Agriculture Subcommittee today about efforts to attract young people into agriculture. Karen Stettler with the Land Stewardship Project is scheduled to speak to a House Ag Committee.

"There are great opportunities that exist in agriculture today. And, this is a great time for beginning farmers to get started. But, there are obstacles. And, I believe that there are public policy solutions that can help beginning farmers get started."

She says one way is to provide prospective farmers credit to get in the business and support training and mentoring programs to help the next generation of farmers and ranchers get their feet on the ground.

Although being a farmer isn't always easy, for Stettler it's always rewarding, and can be economically viable.

"There's something about farming that draws people. And, it's imperative, especially now, when we don't necessarily have a large number of people growing up on farms, that there are ways for people to access information so that they can get their passion out, and be able to farm, and to do so successfully."

Stettler believes the 2007 Farm Bill being written is a good vehicle to attract the next generation.

"As a nation, we can continue to support beginning farmers, by providing opportunities, whether that be through education and training-whether that be through access to markets-whether it be through access to lending. It's important that we have access to land as well. These are the things that really need to be focused on."
