Market Wishes Can Come True

March 29, 2007

Market trading with blinders on. It's not the smartest way to do business, but it's the only way for many Wyoming ranchers these days. And that's why they have high hopes for a bill just introduced by Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi that would lift some of the secret pricing at cattle markets. Moorcroft rancher Skip Waters says that kind of transparency is the basis for other markets.

"Can you imagine what it would be like if people were trading on the stock market, and they didn't know what the stock
had been trading for?"

Meat packing companies defend their practices as a way to keep consumer prices low. But Waters argues family ranching needs a level playing field to compete with the big guys, and he says Sen. Enzi's bill would re-open market
competitiveness.

"Dealing on a more equal basis with the packingindustry, because the packing industry is so consolidated today."

Sen. Enzi's Captive Supply Reform Act has bi-partisan support.
