Last Minute WV Tax Advice – It’s Kid Stuff

April 9, 2007

It's a decision that shouldn’t be taxing. West Virginians filling out state income tax forms can check a box just for kids and make a donation to the West Virginia Children’s Trust Fund. It’s a tax option Jim McKay with the Fund hopes folks will consider. He says there’s a lot of work to do to prevent child abuse and neglect on the local level, and the Fund has a strong track record…

"together, the teams provided services and training to nearly 10,000 children, parents, staff, volunteers and concerned citizens, last year alone."

McKay points out that children who grow up in nurturing homes and communities are much more likely to become capable and independent adults. He adds the donations also leverage matching funds from local businesses and the federal government.

Parents who take part in local classes and workshops on positive parenting say the education is valuable. McKay shares some of the comments.

"'Thanks for helping me enjoy my children instead of being angry and stressed,' says one parent. Another parent commented: 'We need more family programs like this. It helped me become a better parent.'"
